Media Release:
13th October 2007
Aboriginal Elder, Ps Peter Walker, head of Australian Indigenous Christian Ministries has called the Prime Minister's promise to hold a referendum to include the Aboriginal people in the preamble to the Constitution, a miracle of prayer.
Peter Walker said, "Today marks Day 12 of a 21 Day Fast to pray for healing for the land and an end to the drought. One of our prayer requests in this 21 day period, as recorded on our website, www.nsop.com.au is for reconciliation and healing for my people. Many of my people feel a sense of shame. Many others have lost their dignity because of alcohol abuse, drug abuse and sexual abuse. The abused becomes the abuser. The Prime Minister's move to include the Indigenous people of Australia in the constitution as first nation people is a way to bring dignity and respect to my people. I believe this action alone will help turn the situation around in the Northern Territory. This is a significant day in Australian history. This is a direct answer to our prayers.
Today is a very important day for me as I officiate at my father's funeral, Eric Walker, here in Tabulum in the far North Coast of NSW. My dad was an elder of the Bunjalung tribe. Although it is a very sad day it is a great day because he too would have been happy to hear this news if he was alive.
I encourage people to keep on praying with us, right up until 21st October. God will do more miracles in our nation as we continue to pray for healing for the land and an end to the drought."
Warwick Marsh, convenor of the National Prayer Council and close friend of Ps Peter Walker, said, 'This is a significant day for the Aboriginal people and marks the beginning of the tectonic shift that is coming across this nation as we continue to pray over the remaining 9 days of a 21 day call to prayer.
Reconciliation requires a change of heart. The Prime Minister's decision to include the Indigenous people of Australia in the constitution marks a change of heart in Australia. As Peter Walker says, 'The climate for rain comes from the climate of the heart.'
God is up to something in our nation. Let me encourage people to get behind this call to prayer. Check it out for yourself at www.nsop.com.au "
