Update #03/10
Praying for Australian Schools ...
Dear Friends
There are many voices fighting for the opportunity to educate our children, our next generations, with their particular slant on life. Not all with evil intentions of course, but many who have little interest in basic Christian ethical or value systems. In school life children are somewhat protected; although a school freedoms are persistently being undermined, especially in the private sector.
After school they are flung into the big wide world and are vulnerable to every wind of doctrine or ideology that floats their way. There are some incredible brains flouting horrendous ideas and few in churches, schools or homes are equipped to refute them.
Praise God, he positions his people in every dark place; in this instance he has raised up some incredible teachers and speakers to equip us with understanding of these days.
This update encourages pray for our schools and our children and introduces some of the most abhorrent ideas that will confront our kids when they head from school into the world.

Education as a Mind-Molder

Education as a Mind-Moulder / Worldview Sphere
In January's update we highlighted the teachings of various ministries on what have become known as the ' mind-molders' of society. Education is one of the key areas mentioned
In February 2009 we quoted George Barna's important thoughts on 'visionary leadership' ... This whole area of Education is very much in need of good solid visionary leaders. As Barna says:
The future doesn't just happen it is created by visionary leaders. ... "People of distinctive foresight and unflappable conviction, literally create the future."
"They conceive ideas that represent fundamental changes. They carefully and strategically propose them to the public. They tirelessly nurture acceptance of their ideas and they serve as relentless advocates for instituting them."
He also said:
"If you don't like American [Australian] society these days, look back at the past half century and identify visionary leaders who introduced seminal changes that describe the nature of our lives today... Vision is a clear mental portrait of a preferable future. Those who possess the vision become its primary champion. Through the force of their vision, reality is changed forever."

Victoria & Religious Freedom
|
VICTORIA's CONTROLLING AGENDA (Equal Opportunities / Human Rights Legislation)
Victoria seems to be leading the way these days in the destruction of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of choice.
Their latest Diabolical legislation seriously restricts the religious freedom of schools and religions bodies, by ensuring that they PROVE that it is 'an inherent requirement' for a position before they can discriminate in areas such as gender, sexual orientation, marital status and religion.
They must also 'show it is 'reasonably necessary'' to discriminate regarding their 'doctrine' in all other matters (the training and employment of ministers is about the only exception!)
When this bill, 'which gives the Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission more powers than the police to investigate and interrogate groups was rushed through the Lower House,' the Australian Christian Lobby called on the integrity of Victoria's Upper House asking members to 'reject the draconian provisions' at the next debate:
"ACL Victorian Director Rob Ward called on Greens‟ MLCs in particular to demonstrate their commitment to due process by using their numbers in the Upper House to block aspects of the Equal Opportunity Bill 2010 which would give the Commission more powers of investigation than the police even when there was no evidence of a problem.
“This far-reaching legislation was rushed through the Lower House on the strength of the Government‟s numbers with very limited scope for debate,” Mr Ward said."
Saltshakers described the bill as being 'the sort of legislation that would be more recognisable under the banner of the KGB than the government of a free and democratic nation like Australia.'
This Bill will give a statutory body (the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission)
1. The power to enter a church or meeting with the sole motive of assessing what is said.
2. The right to demand that an organisation hand over files and compel the people concerned to attend a hearing at the
Commission, without any complaint being made or any illegal activity being reported, and
3. The power to themselves initiate a complaint of discrimination (removing any illusion that they are the unbiased umpire).
SADLY THE LEGISLATION PASSED
All Members of the Liberal and National Parties voted against the Bill, along with Peter Kavanagh of the Democratic Labor Party.
We congratulate them for their stand for freedom."
There were some fine, passionate speeches - including those from Peter Kavanagh and Liberals Inga Peulich and Bernie Finn. In his speech Damian Drum (Nationals) said he had received more than 1000 emails - so thank you to everyone who wrote to their Members!
All three Greens and all Labor Members voted for the Bill. |

NSW: Ethics over Scriptures!
|
The Australian Christian Lobby called on the NSW Government, this month, to urgently clarify conflicting comments from the St James Ethics Centre as to whether ethics class will be offered in competition with Scripture in schools. NSW Director David Hutt sought assurance that 'the Government’s intent is not to weaken Scripture classes.'
“If the Government sees a need for additional ethical content in the curriculum we would welcome that however this syllabus should be available to all students as part of General Religious Education (GRE) and not create the false dichotomy that there might be a choice between Scripture and ethics,” Mr Hutt said.
THE ACL"s Managing Director, Jim Wallace also responded to the controversy:
You can't teach ethics without referring to Christianity
For more than 100 years, Scripture classes in schools have provided an avenue for children to learn about the Bible, the person of Jesus and the ethic that has underpinned societies such as Australia's.
This is entirely appropriate. No serious historian – regardless of whether or not they are religious — doubts the formative influence of Christianity, its ethics and values on the legal, cultural and political development of Western civilisation. Indeed it is the Judeo-Christian ethic that sets the way we live apart from the way other cultures live.
Now there will always be some parents who conscientiously object to their children being taught the Bible. This is their right.
And it was supposedly with these students in mind that former premier Nathan Rees announced late last year the introduction of "ethics" classes in primary schools.
Reeling from a number of high profile ministerial ethics scandals itself, it was reported that the ethics classes to be rolled out for kids were a chance for the government to show its moral compass still pointed north.
At the time it was made clear that these new, supposedly religion-free, ethics classes would not compete with traditional Scripture classes.
However, with the pilot trial due to start next term in 10 public primary schools, it has emerged they are being pitched with the obvious aim to draw students away from Scripture classes, despite the Government's assurances they would not.
Sounds like a serious ethical issue has arisen even before the first class is taught.
Dr Peter Jensen,
Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney also responded:
Ten Reasons the NSW Ethics Trial is Not a Good Idea
A trial of ethics classes in NSW schools is about to begin. Although suggestions like this have been made in the past, successive education ministers have not allowed it. The only reason it became reality this time was the personal intervention of Premier Nathan Rees, in the dying days of his incumbency.
Christians have been put onto the back foot, forced to answer the dual question, "What's wrong with teaching kids ethics" and "What's wrong with giving non-SRE children something to occupy their time as they sit idle during SRE. Some Christians will not know how to address these questions. Many schools breach SRE guidelines anyway. We must educate ourselves on this vital topic.
- Mainstream ethical behaviour is taught every day in schools by existing teachers. An educational review has shown these classes are not needed.
Are we saying that teachers are not doing their job?
- An ethics course promotes a philosophical system. The St James Ethics Centre is a self-confessed secular organisation. Why is this approach favoured?
Why not give this course a more accurate name, such as "Secular Philosophy?"
- The reason given for trialling the course ' that non-SRE children are sitting idle' is untrue. Non-SRE children are occupied and supervised in well-managed schools. In any case, as the new classes are voluntary, how does it solve the 'problem' There will still be children neither in SRE nor this course.
- Anglican SRE is taught mainly by local volunteers. There is a proven track record of positive community involvement. They are properly screened, trained and authorised.
Who will be the teachers of the SJEC course?
How will they be trained, what connection will they have with the school, and for how long will they keep teaching the course?
- It is being presented as new, exciting and more useful than SRE. The result may be that fewer parents will choose SRE. But this time has been set aside for religious instruction as a recognition of the importance of this subject. Secular ethics is not an alternative. This trial is of ethics (minus God). Next it could be more maths or English. We still want children to be taught about God.
- To be blunt, what this Government has done in approving the trial is renege on an assurance given by governments to the churches since 1880, and reaffirmed in 1990 and 2008, that it would not permit ethics or any other programs to be delivered at the same time as SRE.
How can we be sure that it does not gut SRE from the curriculum?
- The local Parents and Citizens associations are already being compromised by being invited to support this initiative without proper consultation. The P&Cs occupy an honoured role in our society (I was once a P&C president myself!) as they support the whole school community. They are being invited to offer sectarian support for an untried initiative.
- The study of religion is vital to an understanding of our culture, art, faith and human history. A recent survey showed that 50 per cent of Australians believe religion is important to their lives. A significantly greater number believe in God.
In the face of this, is less than an hour of SRE per school week too much to ask?
In fact, is it enough?
- Why is St James Ethics Centre being favoured for this?
Why was a multi-faith group of primary educationists not invited to write it?
Can other providers offer the course?
If not, why not?
Why is it being offered to all students, including SRE students, as a 'complement' to SRE when it was supposed to be for non-SRE students only?
- Be warned: if the Government allows this course to continue after the trial, it will jeopardise religious education in public schools, and without such a religious component, public schools will cease to be inclusive of all children.

"Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you."
Psalm 9:10 |
|
Author and speaker, Ryan Cook, tells an exciting story of friends, who he classifies as ‘reformers,’ that were strategically positioned to influence the schools of a nation in a time of despair:
Note: Out of safety concerns for his friends, Ryan avoids naming his friends as they
continue to work in dangerous countries.
“My friends believe that God knows more than people do, and His Truth is revealed in the Bible. They believe that God was not kidding when He told us to disciple nations. They believe the Bible has the answer for every ethnic and geopolitical problem. The Gospel has answers (truths) for all issues regarding education, business, economics, healthcare, and all other facets of life.
My friends were recruited by a reputable Christian university to pursue the idea of discipling nations. Their story is a fascinating testimony of how truth transforms.
In November 1991, Communism fell in the nation they were working. With the condition that the country was in at the time of their arrival, it was hard to find the political leaders, much less meet with them. As my friends walked the streets with their interpreter looking for government buildings, they found no signs pointing them in the right direction.
They decided to walk into a building that “felt” right. To make a long story short, they walked into the right office and within five minutes were meeting with the country’s minister of economics. They were fulfilling a divine appointment. As they sat in the minister’s office, they told him:
“We are from a Christian university and we are here to help rebuild your country. The only condition we have is that everything we do must line up with God’s Word, the Bible. We will do nothing unless you let us use this as our premise.”
... The minister asked them to come back in a few days. Later that week, when they returned for their meeting, they were astonished at who was there to meet them - the faculty head for economics for the country’s national university, the minister of economics and the president of the country. All were waiting to hear what the men of God had to say. The three powerful men were eager to hear about a plan based on truth.
Their nation had been based on lies, and they knew its foundation needed to change.
... The leaders of the nation embraced my friend’s presentation and responded favourably. As part of the reconstruction of their devastated nation, my friends were given five of the worst-performing elementary schools to test their theories.
Over the next five years those five schools became the best schools in the country. The minister of education was so impressed that he eventually proposed to them that they used their theories in all the schools in a particular area. Those schools became models for the nation.

Historical: The Educators
|
From the Makers of Australia Series:
The Educators
by Gordon Moyes
This country has never valued its teachers enough. Those engaged in education at whatever level, are not recognised for their significant contribution to successive generations. We do not pay them enough, honour them enough, and while loading more and more responsibilities upon them, keep reducing their levels of authority and status within the community. The churches should be in the forefront of honouring our teachers because Jesus came teaching, and left his disciples with the command to evangelise and teach. Wherever the church has gone, it has always established schools.
Did you know education in Australia was established not by the government, but by the Christian Church? In the first hundred years of our country's European settlement there were no government schools. It was only in 1880 that government education officially began and for the next hundred years church schools were opposed by governments that tried to squeeze them out of existence. Only the Roman Catholic parochial schools survived plus some large independent, largely Protestant schools.
One hundred years later, in 1980, we saw the rise of church based schools once more and today 33% of all students are educated in church schools, and this percentage is growing annually in all levels of education. The Bible-based church-related schools of early colonial times was remarkably successful in meeting the academic and spiritual/moral needs of the younger generation of that day.
Australia's first church building also served as a schoolhouse. It was erected by Chaplain Richard Johnson at his own expense in 1793 and served both as church and school for five years until it was burnt down by a convict. |

Professor Peter Singer - Secular Influencer
|
Peter Singer is one of the key secular influencers or visionary leaders in society today - his work and ideas are celebrated in universities around Australia
It goes without saying that his influence as an educator will have catastrophic effects on the value systems of future generations - he is hailed and revered, seeming to also embrace his celebrity status with gusto as evidenced at the recent Global Atheist Convention.
Brief Bio from Wikipedia
Peter Albert David Singer (born 6 July 1946) is an AUSTRALIAN philosopher. He is the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, and laureate professor at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE), University of Melbourne. He specialises in applied ethics, approaching ethical issues from a secular preference utilitarian perspective.
He has served, on two occasions, as chair of philosophy at Monash University, where he founded its Centre for Human Bioethics. In 1996, he ran unsuccessfully as a Green candidate for the Australian Senate. In 2004, he was recognised as the Australian Humanist of the Year by the Council of Australian Humanist Societies. He has been voted one of Australia's ten most influential public intellectuals.
QUALITY OF LIFE OVER SANCTITY OF LIFE:
Donald DeMarco believes that Peter Singer's book ' Rethinking Life and Death' welcomes a new tradition of "QUALITY" of life over "SANCTITY" of life.
He calls it the ' Mein Kampf of the Euthenasia movement saying Peter drops ' many of the euphemisms common to the pro-euthenasia' terminology and calls euthenasia what it really is .... ' killing'
Peter Singer has ignited the ire of many protest groups and has been called the 'Professor of Death' and the 'most dangerous man in the world today.' Some even liken him to Josef Mengele.
SINGER'S THOUGHTS ON THE UNBORN:
... Singer identifies the suffering/enjoying status of all animals with their quality of life. It follows from this precept, then, that those who suffer more than others have less quality-of-life, and those who do not possess an insufficiently developed consciousness fall below the plane of personhood.
He argues, for example, that where a baby has Down syndrome, and in other instances of "life that has begun very badly," parents should be free to kill the child within 28 days after birth.
Here he is in fundamental agreement with Michael Tooley, a philosopher he admires, who states that "new-born humans are neither persons nor quasi-persons, and their destruction is in no way intrinsically wrong." Tooley believes that killing infants becomes wrong when they acquire "morally significant properties," an event he believes occurs about three months after their birth.
According to Singer, some humans are non-persons, while some non-human animals are persons.
The key is not nature or species membership, but consciousness. A pre-conscious human cannot suffer as much as a conscious horse. In dealing with animals, we care only about their quality of life. We put a horse that has broken its leg out of its misery as quickly as possible. This merciful act spares the animal an untold amount of needless suffering. If we look upon human animals in the same fashion, our opposition to killing those who are suffering will begin to dissolve. The "quality-of-life" ethic has a tangible correlative when it relates to suffering; the "sanctity-of-life" seemingly relates to a mere vapor... "

SINGER'S THOUGHTS ON THE EUTHENASIA:
from - The burden borne by the living, The Age, December 31st 2009
".... There are many places where savings can be made. Encouraging people to exercise, to avoid smoking, to drink alcohol only in moderation, and to eat less red meat would help to reduce health-care costs. But, given developed countries' ageing populations, the cost of caring for the elderly is bound to rise. So we will have to find other ways to save money.
Here it makes sense to start at the end. Treating dying patients who do not want to go on living is a waste, yet only a few countries allow physicians actively to assist a patient who requests aid in dying.
In the US, about 27 per cent of Medicare's budget goes towards care in the last year of life. While some of that is spent in the hope that the patient will have many years to live, it is not unusual for hospitals to provide treatments costing tens of thousands of dollars to patients who have no hope of living more than a week or two - and often under sedation or barely conscious.
