Sentinels Prayer Update - "Prayer for Our Leaders"

January 2009

Dear Friends

This is our first Prayer update for 2009 with a special focus on "Prayer for our Leaders."

We contacted a number of Frontline Aussie Christian leaders and asked them to explain, in one paragraph, why this is important - their answers are below. We also highlight an issue of major concern in 2009 and have a look back at some of the legislative changes .

It's been two years since we took time out from producing our Sentinels Prayer Updates in order to develop Link-Zone into a companion resource that encourages prayer for our Nation and support for those positioned on our Frontlines.

As previously declared, "we believe that our God is a God of strategy who purposefully positions and prepares His people to meet every need." With the unrelenting bombardment of 'bad' news and prophecies of 'doom' that target us daily, it is important that we are able to separate ourselves from the world's frustrations, fears and anger. Sentinel's intent, therefore, is to focus on God's perspectives, by being aware of what is happening in our world without vacating the role of watchmen.

We pray that you will find this update useful during this next season of prayer.

Under His Banner

Brian Pickering, Australian Prayer Network1. A Challenge To Australian Christians - Col Stringer

Let me challenge you to recommit yourself to the dual citizenship that we have. Make a quality decision to pray for the nation – every day! We, the believers, have our part to play! You and I can make a vast difference though our faith and prayers, how we live and conduct our lives. God is looking for men and women who will stand in the gap and make that difference. Men and women who are totally sold out to Him! People say to me, “But what can I do to help my nation to be blessed?” Firstly, you can pray for your nation.

Secondly, you can purpose in your heart to place Jesus first in your life and follow Him with all of your heart. It’s not enough to say that you are a believer, you must start to live like one. As we set an example through faith and prayer we can make a difference in our nation. Proverbs 14:34 says: “Righteousness exalts a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people.” We have a voice and we need to use it! There are many practical ways we can use that voice, firstly by praying for our nation and its leaders.

Thirdly, we can communicate our beliefs and desires to our politicians and leaders, as well as the judicial bodies of our government. These people are public servants and represent the people. We can make our voice be heard on a local, state and federal level. If we do not like certain things that are taking place in our nation we need to stand up and voice those concerns – then we also need to pray about them. Conversely if there are things taking place that we appreciate and applaud, then we need to congratulate and show our appreciation to these people. One of the most important areas we can lift our voices is in the area of prayer.

The Bible clearly declares that prayer can make a difference in guiding a nation. 2 Chron. 7:14 says: If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.”

Notice something very important here, God did not say that He would heal the land when everyone got saved! He did not say that He would heal the land when the righteous were in authority. He did not even say that He would heal the land when everyone was living right for God. No, He said: If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray…”

That’s when things will change, that is when things will begin to happen – when we lift our voices in prayer! When we lift our voices to God and earnestly pray it will make a difference. You and I can make a difference! We can do something that will effect this nation – pray! We can open the windows of heaven over this great land of  Australia. We can open a door for God to bless us by the place we take in prayer!

Our prayers – yours and mine – can make a difference. Our prayers – yours and mine – can impact our society and allowing God to intervene and work in this great nation. The most powerful position in the nation is not Parliament House in Canberra. It’s on our knees making earnest prayers to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords!

For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them. Psalm 44:3

2. OF MAJOR CONCERN IN 2009 - An Australian Charter / Bill of Rights

The proposed Charter or Bill of Rights has Christians and non christians alike sitting up and taking notice across Australia ... the following quotes are taken from key articles on the topic for your information.

ARTICLES can be read in FULL via Link-Zone's ELECTION FOCUS column

Star PointSome of you may remember the two pastors - Daniel Scot and Danny Nalliah - who faced years of trauma before a Victorian tribunal because in 2002 they conducted a Christian seminar in a Christian church, on Islam. It took over five years for the complaint by the Islamic Council of Victoria to be settled - after more than a million dollars had been spent in costs on both sides. We owe much to the two pastors' courage and perseverance - but Victoria's religious vilification law is still on the statute books. Moreover a new religious freedom project by the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC, previously the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission - HREOC) could lead to a *national law against religious vilification*. As Victorian Supreme Court Justice Marcia Neave said, truth is no defence against such a law. (Do you value your religious freedom, Family Voice Australia, 5th Jan 09)

Star Point... The question is, do we need such a Charter or Bill of Rights (BoR)? We believe the answer is no - HERE ARE TEN REASONS WHY: - 1. We already have all major rights fully protected in Australia. The right to vote, freedom of speech, freedom of religion ... 2. Australian democracy already has a good safeguard of human rights in the form of its system of checks and balances ... 3. Rights enshrined in a BoR become fixed and very difficult to remove ... 4. A BoR will bring major changes to how legislation and policy are made. Parliaments are meant to perform these functions, not the courts ... 5. The courts become politicised and activist minority groups and special interest groups can use the courts to promote an agenda at odds with the majority ... 6. A BoR will lead to even further litigation and frivolous court cases ... 7. The enactment of a BoR will further add to the “rights culture” that is so characteristic of modern Western societies, along with a further erosion of responsibility.... 8. A BoR has not prevented human rights abuses in nations that have adopted them... 9. whatever can be achieved by a BoR can be achieved by existing means ... 10. Lastly, it must be remembered that rights just do not – or should not – spring from anywhere. For the Western world at least, rights claims have been based on two fundamental sources: the Judeo-Christian worldview, and natural law. While both sources can be debated and discussed, they have provided a firm foundation on which to work for fundamental rights and justice. We dare not so readily remove the base of our Western system of law before we are sure that what we are replacing it with will make for a better foundation. (What is Wrong with a Bill of Rights? B Muehlenberg, Jan 09)

Star Point.... The Inquiry is being run in “partnership” with Monash University, RMIT and the Australian Multicultural Foundation (AMF). What that really means is that the key people are Gary Bouma from Monash (who acted as an expert witness for the Islamic Council in the Catch the Fire vilification case), Des Cahill (RMIT) and Hass Dellal (a Muslim who runs the AMF).

These men also wrote the book called Religion, Cultural Diversity and Safeguarding Australia for an Immigration Department project in 2004. It proposed a rotating roster of prayers in federal Parliament, a national interfaith ‘sacred space’ and a Multifaith Council made up of representatives of all religions. That project also included a book to encourage local Councils to establish Interfaith Networks, and a sanitised guide to Islam. AHRC notes that the current Inquiry builds on these documents ( "Freedom of Religion - Time to Act!, Saltshakers, Jan 09)

Star Point... Supporters of a bill of rights in the constitution know it would be comprehensively defeated at a referendum. So they have adopted the alternative of supporting a charter of rights which can be enacted by politicians alone. Either way, the proposal would enhance the influence of unelected judges at the expense of the elected legislature. In Britain this has led to the enactment of what the Labour Justice Secretary Jack Straw has described as a "villain's charter" much beloved by "ambulance-chasing lawyers" who have a vested interest in human rights advocacy ... The evidence from Britain and Canada is that charters of rights protect the rights of a few individuals at the expense of the rights of the overwhelming majority of citizens. Moreover, few would argue that the US bill of rights makes that nation freer or more democratic than Australia. Regrettably neither position will be strongly heard in McClelland's national human rights consultation committee. ( "Voice of Minority Disappears - Gerard Henderson, SMH, Dec 08)

Star PointPoliticians will be intimidated into falling in to line with the rights agenda of unelected judges should a national charter of rights be introduced. The Attorney General Robert McClelland tried to allay concerns about Parliament being usurped by judges when he announced that consultation on a charter is to commence. But the reality is that judges will issue proclamations ruling that some laws decided by democratically elected politicians contradict the charter. (Charter will Shame Politicians into Towing the Line - Australian Christian Lobby Dec 08)

Star PointFollow the money. And follow the power. This week both paths lead you straight to the legal profession and to the heartland of politically driven activists ... Like pigs sniffing for truffles, lawyers can smell the enticing waft of money and power in the air as they push open new legal industries. For the activists, it’s about influence as they seek to move from the irrelevant fringe of political life to the centre of the action. To coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, today the federal Government will announce a process to introduce a legislative charter of rights. Lawyers will be smiling. They will profit the most from the inevitable rights litigation unleashed by a charter. Inevitable because a charter is deliberately drafted in such vague language that only litigation will determine the ambit of the rights . (Keep Power with the People - The Australian Dec 08)

Star PointCALL it the first swallow of summer. Last week I met a lawyer who said while she opposed a charter of rights, all the barristers on her floor supported it, and for the obvious reason: the intoxicating whiff of litigation. A bill of rights, or a charter, will lay out abstractions like the right to life, or privacy, or property, and thus enable judges to determine - after deliciously drawn-out litigation - what these mean. A shift in power from elected parliaments to unelected judges, by a process of "judicial creep", is part of the bill of rights package ...Churches are becoming aware their immunity from anti-discrimination laws - a justified immunity - will end with a charter or a bill of rights. Church leaders can democratically lobby parliaments and cabinets, but not non-elected, tenured judges. (Lawyers are already drunk with power, Bob Carr, April 08)

3. A PRAYER FOR OUR LEADERS (adapted from John Haggai's 'definition of leadership' in his book, "Lead On.")

Father we thank you for this nation Australia and lift up our leaders to you.

We pray that:

  • They will understand that they need to have the "foresight, wisdom, determination and knowledge of your Will."

  • That you will equip them with the humility needed to continually grow in the discipline of leadership.

  • That you will arm them with your strength and wisdom so that they are not corrupted by the desire for power.

  • That their influence is used to establish results that benefit this nation and do not enable the corruption or destruction of our foundational values.

  • That they have the sensitivity to discern this nations' real needs and the integrity to implement strategies to meet them.

  • That those who are struggling to fulfill their leadership role will draw closer to you for the skill and courage they need to achieve their calling.

  • That they will understand that the insight to navigate this world's political environment in order to "defuse the ticking bomb of angry people on earth" comes only from you and is beyond any man's cleverness.

The above is adapted from John Haggai's 'definition of leadership' in his book, "Lead On." The quote used has been reproduced at the end of the web version of this page but is not included in the print or email versions of this update.

The Lord grants wisdom! His every word is a treasure of knowledge and understanding. He grants good sense to the godly-his saints. He is their shield, protecting them and guarding their pathway. He shows how to distinguish right from wrong, how to find the right decision every time. Proverbs 2:6-9 (LIV)

4. Why Pray - Insight from Australian Leaders

Brian Pickering, Australian Prayer Network
Brian Pickering, National Coordinator, Australian Prayer Network

"The greatest contribution a Christian can make towards establishing and maintaining a Godly direction for our nation is to pray for our leaders. God himself is so much more able than we are to effect change and His instruction to pray for those in authority over us is not only good advice but an imperative if we are to live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.(1 Tim 2: 1-2)."

Jim Wallace, Managing Director, Australian Christian LobbyJim Wallace AM, Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby

As Christians, we have a responsibility to uphold our leaders in prayer. Verses such as 1 Timothy 2:1-2; Romans 13: 1-5; 1 Peter 2:13, 14; and Titus 3:1 provide further insight on this issue. We need to pray for those who govern us, taking an active interest in them and their well-being. There is also a great need for Christians to involve ourselves thoughtfully and responsibly in the political process.

Our proximity to politicians makes us very aware of the incredible burden of public office and particularly its effect on family. It also makes us sensitive to the incredible political and public pressure they are under to compromise personal values to achieve politically correct solutions.

Geoffrey Bullock, Queensland State Officer of FamilyVoice AustraliaDavid & Roslyn Phillips, FamilyVoice Australia.

“The apostle Paul taught us that we need to pray for “kings and those in authority” (1Tim 2:1,2).  That may seem a strange request, especially if the person in authority is someone like the monstrous Roman emperor Nero.  But leaders with foolish or dangerous policies need prayer more than most!

We are living in challenging times of moral and financial meltdown (in that order), along with extremist Muslim terrorism.  World leaders are desperately throwing money at the problem, but recent statements indicate they may be out of their depth.  Australian leaders, including Kevin Rudd, Malcolm Turnbull, Anna Bligh and Lawrence Springborg, need our prayers for God’s wisdom as never before – so that “ we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness”.

Geoffrey Bullock, Queensland State Officer of FamilyVoice AustraliaPeter & Jenny Stokes, Saltshakers

“It is vital that Christians pray for our community and political leaders. Our democratic system allows us to have a say in who is elected, but that doesn't mean we will agree with all the policies of the elected government. In fact, we have a responsibility to put a Christian perspective into political debates and that may mean opposing policies proposed by the government of the day. However, we still need to pray for our political leaders. We need to pray that they will have wisdom and discernment and that they will look to God for that wisdom.

We must remember though, that the reason Paul tells Timothy to pray for our leaders, when he says "Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority", is that "we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence." However, this isn't just so we can have a peaceful life for ourselves, but that it will allow the gospel to be spread more effectively, since God "desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth". (1 Tim 2: 1-7)

Bill Muehlenberg, Culture WatchBill Muehlenberg, Culture Watch, Secretary of the Family Council of Victoria, Lecturer in theology, apologetics and ethics

Scripture makes it clear that we are to pray for our leaders (see for example 1 Tim. 2:1-2). As governments and leadership becomes increasingly secular and anti-Christian, this is all the more important. And there is a practical benefit as well: “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper." (Jer. 29:7) Pray that leaders make wise and godly decisions, and that God’s will can take place through their rule.

Geoffrey Bullock, Queensland State Officer of FamilyVoice AustraliaGeoffrey Bullock, Queensland State Officer of FamilyVoice Australia.

“Christians are called to pray “for kings and all are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Timothy 2:2 ESV).  We are also called to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44), and that includes leaders of our land who are opposed to the Christian gospel.  In 2008, one state MP refused my desire for 15 minutes of her time to explain FamilyVoice’s ‘raison d’être’.  She stated that she knew what we were on about, and expressed her opposition to our stance on issues.   I expressed my disappointment, but honoured her request.  How important that I maintain a loving and dignified stance in my future approaches to her!  This, coupled with prayer, may be the only inroads God has to her life.  As I shine the light of Christ’s love in these ways, God can help her see her need of Him.”

"Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need." Hebrews, 4:16
