"Pray for The Lost "

Dear Friends

"Man is not just unethical, he is lost and dead."

Ravi Zacharias says, "The biggest difference between Jesus Christ and the ethical and moral teachers who have been deified by man is that these moralists came to make bad people good. Jesus came to make DEAD people LIVE"

"East or West, North or South, Ancient or Modern the problem and solutions are the same. Once we understand the heinousness of sin we gain a deep and lasting gratitude for God. I was a 17 year old on a bed of suicide in Delhi when I gave my life to Jesus Christ. I was not a bad man becoming a good man, I was a dead man who was now going to live for a greater cause than he was."

This update draws attention to the "Lostness" of man; the modern doctrines or ideas that spring from this "Lostness", how Christians have responded to this "Lostness" throughout history and the need for Australia to know her Saviour.

We pray that you will find this update useful.

The Insanity of "Lost" Men

Charles FinneyCharles Finney made the following observation:

"Moral insanity ... is will-madness. The man retains his intellectual powers unimpaired, but he sets his heart fully to do evil. He refuses to yield to the demands of conscience. He practically disregards the obligations of moral responsibility... In this form of insanity the reason remains unimpaired but the heart deliberately disobeys.

... Who are the morally insane? Those who, not being intellectually insane, ACT as if they were... they try to make themselves happy in their sins and their selfishness. Yet they know they cannot do it..."

"I have often met with sinners who seemed to think that every attempt to make them Christians is a scheme to take them in and sell them into slavery. They by no means estimate religion as if it came forth from a God of love. Practically, they treat religion as if - embraced - it would be their ruin. Yet, in all this they act utterly against their own convictions. They know better. If they did not their guilt would be exceedingly small compared to what it is."

"... An end madly chosen, sought by means madly devised - this is the life history of the masses who reject God. If this were the result of wrong intellectual judgments we would say at once that the race have gone mad ... Sinners act s if they were afraid they should be saved. Often they seem to be making their salvation as difficult as possible ... they regard damnation as if it were salvation, and salvation as if it were damnation. They rush upon damnation as if it were heaven and flee salvation as if it were hell.

Is this exaggeration? No, this is only the simple truth.... this moral insanity is a state of mingled wickedness. The special feature of it which makes it a guilty state is that it is voluntary. It results not from the loss of reason but from the abuse of reason."

"...Conversion to God is becoming morally sane. It consists in restoring the will and the affections to the just control of the intelligence, the reason and the conscience, so as to put the man once more in harmony with himself - all his faculties adjusted to their true positions and proper functions."

Madness is in their heart while they live - Ecclesiastes 9:3
Australian Influencers & Policy Makers

1. Improve Child Health by Killing the Child

Stephen Smith - Foreign Minister Foreign minister, Stephen Smith announced, this month, the governments decision to overturn the ban on foreign aid going to abortion services.

The Australian reported: "FOREIGN aid will be able to be spent on abortion services and counselling after the Rudd Government today lifted a ban established 13 years ago by the Howard government ... The current guidelines prohibit any overseas development funding from being used for activities that involve the termination of a pregnancy"

Mr Smith's closing words were, "This is part of Australia's commitment to advance the Millennium Development Goals and to improve child and maternal health" (1)

Christian Cultural missionary, Bill Muehlenberg responds:
" Let’s see if I got this straight: the government’s idea of improving a child’s health is to kill it.  Am I missing something here? Just how does snuffing out the life of an unborn child contribute to improving its health? Even Orwellian doublespeak could not come up with that sort of rubbish. The brave new world we live in means we can call any vice a virtue, and any virtue a vice. We can call black white and white black, and do so with a straight face." Link

Queensland Senator, Ron Boswell sees the decision as a "Betrayal" of trust:
“The decision today made by Kevin Rudd’s Labor Government to allow Australia foreign aid programs to fund abortion through Non Government Organisations, will be seen as a betrayal by the Churches and their communities,” said Senator Ron Boswell ... “The Prime Minister influenced and campaigned hard to harness the Christian vote to Labor in the last election. - he assured the Christian vote that their vote was safe with him and his party.”Link

2. Health Workers Forced to Act against their Conscience

There's still hope for Victoria's Pro-Life Doctors and Nurses:

It was a tragic day in October last year when what has been called "one of the most vile pieces of legislation yet seen in this land" passed in Victoria. It is now legal to kill a baby at any stage of the pregnancy, of course late term abortions were already being performed, but now they are legal. Link

The Australian Prayer Network labelled this an "abhorrent" bill. The Australian Christian Lobby called it a "tragic" vote and labelled the decision day, "Black Friday." Gordon Moyes suggested a "new approach to the abortion debate and Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart declared the passing of Abortion Law Reform Bill 2008 to be a "betrayal of humanity."

Of course the Labor ladies of Emily's List were rejoicing in what they considered "landmark legislation" and "a vital shift in the way that our society respects women's ability to make decisions about their bodies and their lives"

Doctors and Nurses have called on the Prime Minister for his intervention.

The Bill is unprecedented in the western world, in imposing laws that would force doctors to act in violation of their conscientious beliefs by actively assisting patients to obtain an abortion.

The Abortion Law Reform Bill breaches human rights and is in conflict both with Victoria’s Charter of Rights and Responsibilities and the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights.Link

Just this month, Catholic Health CEO Martin Laverty has called on Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland to use international human rights obligations to overturn Victorian legislation requiring conscientiously objecting doctors to provide abortion referrals....

Tasmanian Labor Senator Helen Polley has also written to Mr McClelland on the matter.

"If you have very strong religious convictions on abortion you should not have to be participating in any form in the process, including referring women," Senator Polley told The Sunday Age.

"There are real concerns that the only way to test this law will be for someone to be prosecuted."

Catholic Health chief executive Martin Laverty said " staff at the state's 15 Catholic hospitals would not be expected to take any part in the abortion process, including referring women to other doctors, and Catholic Health was ready to challenge the law in court if anyone were to be prosecuted for refusing to provide a referral. Link

IT IS IRONIC THAT THIS LAW HAS BEEN ENACTED TO PROTECT THE DOCTORS PERFORMING ILLEGAL OPERATIONS AND THE WOMEN WHO AUTHORISE THEM - AND MAKES CRIMINALS OF THOSE WHO WOULD FIGHT TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF BABIES AND WHO OPPOSE THE TAKING OF ANY HUMAN LIFE. - PLEASE PRAY FOR SANITY TO BE RESTORED IN VICTORIA.

"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered
and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." (Hebrews 4:13)

3. 10% of our Young People are Homosexual

Bill MuehlenbergOr so a well known psychologist told us recently when the Seven Network's Today Tonight featured the topic in relation to Home & Away's controversial "Lesbian Kiss'

Bill Muehlenberg writes: "I immediately emailed this man, telling him this was of course a myth perpetrated by the homosexual lobby, and that I was quite happy to send him the documentation on this. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he never got back to me."

"... The truth is, the ten per cent claim is a falsehood. Let me offer a sampling of the evidence. An issue of Newsweek admitted that the 10 per cent figure which sexologist Alfred Kinsey used was highly inflated: “Activists seized on the double digits to strengthen their political message. . . . Policymakers and the press adopted the estimate - despite protests from skeptical conservatives - citing it time and time again. But new evidence suggests that ideology, not sound science, has perpetuated a 1-in-ten myth.”

... the truth is, those who have sought to do the figures in Australia have come out with quite low figures. A recent study by Monash University entitled “How Gay is Australia?” based on 2001 Census figures found very low numbers indeed. It found that only 37,774 persons are in same sex couples; persons in same sex couples are only 0.2 per cent of the total population; and persons in same sex couples are only 0.47 per cent of all persons in couples.

A 2008 Victorian government report found similar numbers. According to The State of Victoria’s Young People, 97.9 per cent of Victorians aged between 12 and 24 regarded themselves as heterosexual; 1.5 per cent identified as bisexual; and 0.6 per cent identified as homosexual.

And a recent study of sexuality in Australia has confirmed that the ten per cent figure is greatly overblown. In a study of nearly 20,000 Australians, La Trobe University researchers found that 97.4 per cent of Australians said their sexual identity was heterosexual. A mere 1.6 said it was homosexual, and a paltry 0.9 per cent said it was bisexual. So much for the 10 per cent myth.Read More

NOTE: THE Seven Network has censored a lesbian kissing scene in its family soapie Home and Away after a viewer backlash. Since the lesbian story-line began two weeks ago, 100,000 viewers have turned off and complaints have been flooding in. The now-muted kiss will air on Tuesday night. The decision was taken to play down the scene after complaints from conservative lobby groups in media reports were followed by complaints from viewers. Link

THERE IS ALWAYS THE DANGER THAT WE WILL BE CALLED BIGOTS OR HOMOPHOBES FOR INSISTING ON TRUTH IN STATISTICS - PRAY THAT GOD'S HEART WILL TRULY BE SEEN IN THIS VOLATILE AREA

"God does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust." (Psalm 103:10-14)

4. Calling Evil Good

Hilary & MargaretU.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been honored by Planned Parenthood...the nation's leading abortionist.... with its Margaret Sanger Award, the organization's highest honor, for her work throughout her public service career on behalf of women's health and reproductive rights.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List believes Secretary Clinton is ignorant about Sanger's past. "What she is doing for Planned Parenthood is raising its profile and helping it raise money based on the reputation of Margaret Sanger," she argues. "So in essence, Hillary Clinton is in inter-generational partnership with Margaret Sanger, even if she doesn't realize it."

Margaret Sanger, who once referred to blacks as "human weeds" has an abominable past:

The idea of weeding out the imperfect to develop an ideal race has been around for quite some time. People have long been interested in perfecting the human species by means of medicine, technology and even coercion. The term for all this is ‘eugenics’ (from the Greek, ‘well-born’ or ‘good birth’) ... A leading proponent of eugenics in the US was Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) the founder of Planned Parenthood, the biggest promoter of sex education, abortion and birth control in the world today.

Sanger, who was born in New York, plunged into radical politics, suffragette feminism, and unfettered sex while in college. She married into money, became a socialist, and pursued anarchist and utopian causes. She was especially influenced by English sexologist Havelock Ellis and his Studies in the Psychology of Sex. Ellis was a proponent of free love and every kind of sexual deviancy. He was to later become one of her many lovers.

Ellis was also a eugenicist, and advocated sterilizing the “unfit”. He said, “Feeble-mindedness is an absolute dead-weight on the race; it is an evil that is unmitigated”. He said those who would not volunteer for sterilization should have their Poor Relief withdrawn from them.

In 1917 Sanger founded the Birth Control League, which changed its name to Planned Parenthood Federation of America in 1942 ... Sanger also published a paper called The Woman Rebel, with “No Gods! No Masters” emblazoned on the masthead. The first issue denounced marriage as a “degenerate institution,” capitalism as “indecent exploitation,” and sexual modesty as “obscene prudery”.

... her 1922 book, The Pivot of Civilization, she called for the elimination of “human weeds,” for the cessation of charity, for the segregation of “morons, misfits and the maladjusted” and the sterilization of “genetically inferior races”.

... Not surprisingly, she exerted a lot of influence, especially on one person who was probably the greatest applied eugenicist who ever lived: Adolf Hitler. In 1929 he said, “if a million children were born in a year and 800,000 of the weakest and most ‘unworthy’ were killed, the end result would be a strengthening of the population.” As his deputy Rudolf Hess explained in 1934, “National Socialism is nothing but applied biology”.

... The eugenics movement was very powerful and hugely influential. In 1907 Indiana became the first US state to pass mandatory sterilisation legislation. It made sterilisation mandatory for criminals, idiots, rapists, and imbeciles who were in state custody. Soon thereafter nearly 30 US states had such laws in operation.

... Planned Parenthood International continues to fulfil Sanger’s vision. Mary S. Calderone, head of the Sex Information and Education Council (SIECUS) and former president and medical director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, once said: “We have yet to beat the drum for birth control in the way we beat them for polio vaccine, we are still unable to put babies in the class of dangerous epidemics, even though this is the exact truth.” Warren Hern, abortionist and an author in Planned Parenthood’s journal Family Planning Perspectives, wrote an article entitled “Is Pregnancy Normal?” in which he said: “[Pregnancy] may be defined as a disease … [and] … treated by evacuation of the uterine contents.”

PPI has also recently recommended “compulsory abortion for out-of-wedlock pregnancies,” “compulsory sterilization for those who have already had two children,” and “tax penalties” for existing large families.

Johnsen & Obama
Also in the News:

11/08 | In a move that underscores Barack Obama's dedication to promoting abortion, the incoming president has named a prominent pro-abortion attorney to serve as a member of his Department of Justice Review Team.Link

30/03/09 | Across the country, Susan B. Anthony List members expressed outrage at Johnsen’s nomination, sending over 26,000 letters of opposition to their U.S. Senators. Johnsen was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 19th by a vote of 11-7.

While Johnsen served as the legal counsel for National Abortion & Reproductive Rights Action League (now NARAL Pro-Choice America), she authored numerous legal opinions rejecting any and all restrictions on abortion ...

Some notable Dawn Johnsen quotes:

“Abortion restrictions ‘reduce pregnant women to no more than fetal containers.’”

"The argument that women who become pregnant have in some sense consented to the pregnancy belies reality...and others who are the inevitable losers in the contraceptive lottery no more ‘consent’ to pregnancy than pedestrians ‘consent’ to being struck by drunk drivers.”

The experience [of abortion] is no longer traumatic; the response of most women to the experience is relief.”

“Her bizarre characterizations of pregnancy as ‘slavery’ and mothers as ‘losers in the contraceptive lottery’ expose an unacceptable disdain for commonsense abortion restrictions and motherhood in general.

History: Christians Respond to the "Lostness" of Man

TelemachusTelemachus c. 402 AD

In the fifth century an Eastern Monk, named Telemachus, was led by an inner voice to to Rome without knowing why. He followed the crowds to the Coliseum.

Horrified at the sight of the gladiator's fight to the death and the crowd's lust for blood, he leapt into the arena himself.

As he approached the gladiator's stopped momentarily and he pleaded to them and to the crowd, "In the name of Christ, forbear!"

It is said that a furious crowd stoned him to death, some say they tore at his limbs. Nevertheless, Emperor Herodian was so moved by the story of his courage that he issued an edict abolishing the gladiatorial circus.

The Story is found in the writings of Theodoret, Bishop of Cyrrhus in Syria (393-457 A.D.) ... "Honorius, who inherited the empire of Europe, put a stop to the gladitorial combats which had long been held at Rome.  The occasion of his doing so arose from the following circumstance.  A certain man of the name of Telemachus had embraced the ascetic life.  He had set out from the East and for this reason had repaired to Rome.  There, when the abominable spectacle was being exhibited, he went himself into the stadium, and stepping down into the arena, endeavoured to stop the men who were wielding their weapons against one another.  The spectators of the slaughter were indignant, and inspired by the triad fury of the demon who delights in those bloody deeds, stoned the peacemaker to death.... When the admirable emperor was informed of this he numbered Telemachus in the number of victorius martyrs, and put an end to that impious spectacle." Source: Link

7th Earl of ShaftesburyAnthony Ashley Cooper

Anthony Ashley Cooper was born on April 28, 1801, and was known as Lord Ashley until he succeeded his father as Earl of Shaftesbury in 1851... For reasons not completely known, though partly through the influence of a family servant, Lord Ashley early became an Evangelical and always remained, as he put it, "an Evangelical of the Evangelicals. He had an infinite compassion for the poor, the helpless, and the unfortunate.

"God had called me," he wrote, "to labour among the poor."

After Lord Ashley's election in 1826 as a Conservative member of Parliament, his first important speech urged the improvement of laws governing the treatment of the insane. He became chairman of the Lunacy Commissioners, established in that year, and he continued in that office until his death. In 1845 he wrote parliamentary acts to strengthen the controls against unjust institutionalization, to protect patients, to extend facilities, and to professionalize public supervision. He conducted a similar campaign against the employment - often under horrifying conditions - of small boys as chimney sweeps, and he became chairman of the Climbing Boys' Society, a typical Victorian reform society.

In the 1840s Lord Ashley adopted the Ragged School movement as another cause. This movement involved the provision of rudimentary education and housing for thousands of homeless children in London .... Lord Ashley's most important and most famous work was conducted as a member of Parliament between 1832 and 1850. He was the leader of the struggle for statutory intervention in the hours and working conditions of children in English textile mills and also of women and children employed in mines. He later recorded that he took up the first cause quite unexpectedly and became suddenly convinced of his duty by "meditation and prayer." Over nearly 2 decades of deep social unrest he steadily fought for the limitation of the work of women and children to 10 hours a day, and he represented in Parliament a massive popular movement by the workers of Lancashire and Yorkshire. The victory in this cause was substantially won

His self-appointed career kept him aloof from politics, especially after 1846. When Lord Shaftesbury died, on Oct. 1, 1885, he had been much honored for his work, but he had also been bypassed by the political and social changes of the later Victorian era.

TelemachusDietrich Bonhoeffer - 1945

Internationally renowned theologian and a leader of the German resistance against Hitler, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, was smuggled out of Germany by church authorities in 1939 soon after receiving notice of being called into the armed forces. Conscription meant pledging allegiance to the Fuhrer, as dishonest an act, Bonhoeffer felt, as sacrificing to a Roman Emperor.

From his New York base he continued to write and was a much sought after speaker. Despite his comfortable surroundings however, he experienced a profound homesickness that he had never known before. He battled to understand his unease eventually coming to the conclusion that "his vocation compelled him to share in his countrymen's fate as they suffered the Nazi's evil..." He explained

"I have made a mistake in coming to America ... Christians in Germany will face the terrible alternative of either willing the defeat of their nation in order that Christian civilisation may survive, or willing the victory of their nation and thereby destroying our civilisation. I know which of these alternatives I must choose; but I cannot make this choice in security."

Upon his return to Germany, Bonhoeffer became a double-agent, ostensibly spying for the Third Reich while working for its downfall. Though he had renounced violence, he now came to see the use of force on behalf of the innocent as among the demands for love. Christians must commit themselves "not just to bind up the victims beneath the wheel but to halt the wheel itself." ... His cover story was to collect information from his church contacts in Switzerland, England and elsewhere - in reality, he informed the Allies of the plans to assassinate Hitler and to plead for help. He also actively smuggled Jews out of the country.

On April 5th 1943 he was arrested. He was taken to Tegal, the Berlin facility for political prisoners and kept in Isolation for twelve days. After an initial period of depression he set himself a rigorous schedule that included writing and studying. ... He turned to the works of the early church fathers, Tertullian, Cyprian and others. Their experience struck him as like their own as they had contended for the faith in a world dominated by hostile paganism - cults of race and blood to which Nazism was a return.

On April 5th 1944, not long after a final attempt on Hitler's life had failed, Bonhoeffer was condemned to death. The camp doctor remembered the manner in which he went to his death: " I was most deeply moved by the way this unusually lovable man prayed, so devout and certain that God heard his prayer. At the place of execution, he again said a short prayer and then climbed the steps to the gallows, brave and composed. His death ensued after a few seconds. In the fifty years that I worked as a doctor, I have hardly ever seen a man die so entirely submissive to the will of God."

"Lost" Men in Need of a Comforter - Francis Schaeffer

The Loneliness

Francis SchaefferFrancis Schaeffer:

"What marks our own generation? It is the fact that modern man thinks there is nobody home in the universe. Nobody to love man, nobody to comfort him, even while he seeks desperately to find comfort in the limited, finite horizontal relationships of life. But it does not work - in his art, in his music, or anywhere else. In his literature, in his drama, it does not work. In the sexual act, in human relationships, he finds only the devastatingly sterile and the dreadfully ugly."

"... Let us understand this: in the final analysis only a personal comforter can comfort man who is personal, and only one Comforter is great enough, the infinite personal God who exists ... only He is the sufficient Comforter.

The Song of Solomon beautifully depicts the need for a personal comforter. This magnificent love song puts emphasis on the fact that God has made us man and woman ... This is why there is a place for a love song in the Scriptures. In the Song of Solomon we find that the girl has gone to her room for the night; she has anointed herself with perfumes and has retired. Then there is a knock at the door. Her lover has come and she wants to be with him. But she hesitates and remains inside. She has gone to bed and does not want to get up; after all, she has washed and her hands are anointed. Then suddenly he leaves and as soon as she realises this, she sees that all the perfume is absolutely worthless once the lover has gone.

This is exactly the way it is with man. Struggling with the trappings of personality, man finds that, if there is no one there to be a real and sufficient lover, if there is no infinite personal God, then his wrestling with the trappings of personality is futile.

Schaeffer Francis, Death in the City, Intervarsity Press, Chicago, USA 1972, pages 21-27

A Prayer for Australia to know her Saviour

Father, We pray that:

  • You will raise up an army of believers who will dare to believe for the reformation of this nation.

  • You will gift us with discernment and understanding that enables us to see beyond the doctrines of "Lost" men to the underlying truth - what does our nation need - Give us eyes to see.

  • You will stir up our hearts with a passion for your presence and for your word. Draw us closer Lord so that we can hear the plans and purposes you have for our communities and know our place in these. Give us ears to hear.

  • We will no longer turn away from the needs around us - show us what you want of us Lord, help us make a difference. Give us hearts that respond.

  • You will raise up an army of undercover heroes, ones who do not need recognition, but seek to undergird and strengthen the vital institutions of this nation. Give us a desire for righteousness.

  • You will turn the hearts of your people to the needs of those you have given into our care, the refugees, the victims of torture, the victims of abuse - that their lives and experiences will be turned around and hope will be restored. Give us a desire for the healing of the broken.

  • You will open doors for your word, opportunities for us to take the gospel into every area of society

  • Most importantly that You will be seen and known and heard in all our endeavours.
Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. He changes times and season; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning." Daniel 2:20-21
