French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy announced his government would recognize the Hamas led PA unity gang.
A visit to France by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas won this major breakthrough but failed to impress other more realistic members of the EU.
"I encouraged Mr Abbas to persevere in his efforts to quickly form a national unity government," the FM told reporters. He and Abbas smiled and shook hands for the obligatory pic to color the pages of the world press.
Meanwhile back in reality, Ishmael Haniyeh who will be prime minister of the new government still led by the terrorist outfit Hamas, was putting together the team France will recognize. Haniyeh is busily inviting more terrorists to join his government.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP) is on top of his list. They are unified with Hamas in the sense, their common ground is the destruction of Israel, which it seems the French will now happily endorse.
Haniyeh has also made overtures to Islamic Jihad. They claimed responsibility for the foiled suicide bid in Tel Aviv last week.
Their leader recently told Al Jazeera they planned to murder prominent US officials. He said, "Yes!" when asked in the interview if Dr Condoleezza Rice was a target.
It's good to know the French support them too.
The Palestinian People's Party (PPP) are also into discussions with Haniyeh. The PPP was birthed from communist party roots. They may well join the unity government line up.
Morton A. Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America spoke about the new terrorist groups lining up to join the PA unity government. He said, it was "further proof that Mahmoud Abbas is not a moderate peace-maker that so many claim him to be, but is in fact, an extremist terrorist committed to Fatah's long-standing goal of destroying Israel."
Come to think about it, what one thing would unify the terrorist.
What one common purpose do they have?
Only days ago Hamas announced their ceasefire with Israel was over. They once again declared war, the war that never stops, but France is OK with that.
Meanwhile over the road in Jordan, King Abdullah had something to say. "There have to be certain criteria that the new PA government has to accept if we're going to move the peace process forward," he said.
He added, "This is our last opportunity!"
"You're not alone in this," he said when asked about the concerns of Israel where the power-sharing tango between Hamas-Fatah and the others is concerned.
"There's international common ground - not just Western, but also Arab and to an extent Muslim - that believe that there have to be certain criteria that the new government has to accept if we're going to move the process forward," he said.
So where does that put France?
They support the Hamas-Fatah unity government but no one else in the region has gone that far.
King Abdullah referred to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates when he said, "It is not just the international players, but also the Arab countries are also expecting the new Palestinian government to adhere to the policies that we have set out in the Quartet, and in the Arab Quartet also!"
The King even more recently requested the United Kingdom and the USA to do more for negotiating peace in the region.
Make no mistake about it. The people in-the-know are preparing for war and they believe it will be regional.
It is very hard to get the seriousness of this situation through to those who are absorbed with the Superbowl, or Rose Bowl or World Cup cricket or any other activity which the emperor has scheduled for the Colisseum.
Christians at the stake is a prospect because it is a favorite activity of Islamic terrorists in Bethlehem even today, maybe not the stake, but rape, persecution and threats, that sort of thing.
They really haven't had a time out for a long time.
A friend recently advised me Israel could not attack Iran as they would need permission from the US to use airspace.
Now we know those negotiations have already begun and the US is looking at an `air corridor' over Iraq.
Three Arab countries have now indicated they would allow Israeli fighters air access to Iran.
King Abdullah believes we have entered the days of the final chance to resolve the issues in the region.
In light of his concern he is heading to Washington and London to press for greater effort from the super-powers.
On his return trip he will visit Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
I for one am not surprised he gave Paris a big miss! .
