What are They Fighting For?

The capture and killing of Israeli soldiers by the terrorist organization Hizbollah sparked the immediate conflict with Israel. But this was a spark, not the beginning of the war.
In 2005 word spread of a new organization "Al Qaeda Mesopatamia." Instead of 'jihad' (war with Israel) the parties declared "global jihad " which eyed much wider targets.
Analysts linked Iran, Syria, Hizbollah, Hamas, The Moslem Brotherhood, Islamic Jihad into a loosely connected united force.
A chapter of Al Qaeda opened in the Palestinian territories.
Time and again Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced his intention "to wipe Israel off the map." Hamas officials used the same phrase when campaigning for elections to lead the government of the Palestinian Authority and they won!
Iran also announced its determined intentions "to go nuclear." World diplomats continue to dance around this escalation but in Israel the thought is frightening.
In the plan `to wipe Israel off the map "Hizbollah and Hamas are ideally located to provide front-line provocation. Hizbollah is already firing missiles provided by Iran and Syria and they travel as far as Haifa and Afula. Hizbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah threatens to shoot further `into the heart of Israel."
While the increased power of the missiles already used cause great fear and tragedy, nuclear or chemical weapons would create a disaster which could reach Holocaust proportions.
There are politicians and diplomats who denounce the Israel action into Lebanon. They appear naïve and even weak in the face of terrorism. Their humanitarian concern is understood but the fault of this crisis cannot be hoisted on Israel.
Even as Dr Condoleezza Rice returned to Israel Saturday and continues to Lebanon Sunday in an attempt to deal wisely with the problem, Hassan Nasrallah spoke on television declaring more missiles and more aggression.
Do world leaders seriously believe Israel should pack away their arms and accept the slaughter of its people? Is that what they would do if the attacks were aimed at the people they represent?
You will never cure a virus by shutting down your computer. You have to remove every trace of it before your computer can function effectively again. It is estimated 80 per cent of the Lebanese now support the Hizbollah. The Israel air attacks may have caused that number to leap.
The Lebanese government elections will be held in three years time. We may well be looking at a situation in 2009 when the government of Lebanon is controlled by Hizbollah, the ruling party in the new state of Palestine may well be Hamas and in Iran a nuclear weapon will be ready to go.
Wipe Israel off the map in such a scenario is frightening.
Also Iranian missiles will be able to hit the USA by then.
The humanitarian crisis is a real issue in this conflict. It is a dilemma the international community must deal with as quickly as possible.
The US is hanging strong with Israel on the battlefield because the Bush Administration knows the Iranian plan. The silence of many Arab countries is easily understood. Iran and its cohorts want to overthrow the leaders in Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia
There is a new superpower emerging. It is Iran and Hizbollah is its extended family.
