Fathers in Families
Strengthening & Supporting Fathers and Turning the Tide of Fatherlessness in Australia
Fathers in Families is an accurate documentation of the progress of the fatherhood movement in Australia over recent years.
Over thirty years ago, child psychologist Michael Lamb accurately described fathers as the 'forgotten contributors to child development.'
".. indeed for much of the twentieth century, psychologists, childrearing experts and popular culture largely assumed that when it came to child development, fathers were of secondary importance to mothers and perhaps even unnecessary. Increased rates of divorce and out of wedlock childbearing over the past four decades marginalised fathers even further, as an unprecendented number of children gew up in father absent homes."
The Fatherhood Foundation was officially incorporated in May 2002 and has been privileged to play an important role in the process of cultural change in Australia regarding fathering.
This booklet contains:
The 12 pt Plan
- a policy document agreed upon by a consensus of delegates at the 2003 National Fathering Forum held at Parliament House, Canberra. This Twelve Point Plan puts forward some key recommendations to address problems of fatherlessness in Australia.
Strategic Summary of the Conference on Fatherhood
On 18th & 19th August 2003, men and father's groups, family law reform groups, pro-family charity groups, government agencies and service providers, leaders and representatives from women and mothers groups and many many others gathered in Parliament house.
Almost everyone who came to the conference agreed that the restoration of fatherhood in Australia was one of Australia's most pressing social problems.
