Where Authority Comes From

In Genesis 1:26 God gave Adam dominion over all the earth. The word dominion in the Hebrew text (rayam) means to rule or reign. God gave mankind authority to rule over all the planet and everything in it. Of course Adam bowed to Satan and sinned and Satan by default became ‘god of this world’ or more correctly, ‘god of this world system’.
2 Cor 4:3-4: The god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not.
Consider Luke 4:6. Satan offered Jesus all power and associated glory which had been given to him by Adam (If that wasn’t true, it would not have been a legitimate temptation).
Proverbs 29:2 tell us that when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn (KJV).
Notice the Scripture doesn’t say “when the righteous have authority”, it says “when the righteous are in authority. There is a difference between having authority and being in authority. You can have authority and not exercise it, and we see this all over the world today. As long as Adam had not sinned, he was in authority. When he was in authority everything went well. When he sinned, Satan became god of this world and the wicked began to rule.
Kingdom-delegated authority is found in Romans 13:1-2
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God.
Notice it says “every soul”. No exceptions.
In this specific text Paul is referring to civil or governing authorities.
Police form part of those ‘governing authorities’. The power and authority invested in police is derived from the governing state or territories for the primary purpose of enforcing the rule of law. Police are in fact, appointed by God and are working for Him (whether they realize it or not). In honouring them, we honour Him who appointed them.
It is important to understand what the Word of God states. All authority is of God, but not all authority is godly. Hence the need to pray for righteous rule over our states and nation. In fact this is a command in 1 Tim 2: 1-2.
I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is god and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour. KJV
The word kings means all who are in authority. If we are governed by righteous authority, we are going to experience a quiet and peaceable life.
Remember in Romans 13: 1-4, governmental authorities are called ‘ ministers of God for our good’, and we are commanded by God to be subject to their authority. It was never God’s plan or design for His
righteous children to be under the authority and governed by the laws of those who are ungodly.
The problem is, few understand the importance of honouring and submitting to God’s appointed authorities. In fact we dishonour authority by not submitting to it.
It is interesting to note that whenever the people of Israel were ruled by a righteous, God fearing king, they were blessed and prospered. Conversely, they were cursed and oppressed under the rule of a wicked king. The same is true in the word today.
The same people that demand peace and safety in their communities dishonour the very authority God ordained to ensure such peace and safety.
Even some ministers of the Gospel have failed to see this important truth and dishonoured God’s ordained authorities. It is my prayer that a revelation of this will sweep through the Christian Church so its power and authority can be re-established.
If the church will recognise and honour police officer as God’s appointed authorities, they honour the One who sent them.
On a final note I refer you to proverbs 21:1 which says:
The King’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will (KJV)
God appoints and God also reserves the right to remove.
