APPALLING LOSS OF POLICE LIFE

September 2010

"The appalling shooting death of plain clothes constable Bill Crews, 26, of New South Wales Police Force, during a drugs raid in the Sydney southwest suburb of Bankstown on Wednesday night, has shocked the whole community.  His death reveals how dangerous is the task of keeping the community safe," said Rev Hon Dr Gordon Moyes, NSW Parliamentary Leader of the Family First Party.

Dr Moyes had been participating in a condolence motion that took precedence over all Legislative business in the NSW Parliament.

Two men possessing two guns have been charged over the incident.

Constable Crews was typical of thousands of dedicated and committed officers who put their own safety and welfare on the line every day. We commend the brave colleagues of Constable Crews who continued the raid after the Constable was shot, arresting the offenders and securing the crime scene.

Homicide detectives have now taken charge of the investigation.

"The Police Wall of Remembrance in the domain has far too many names of policemen who have given their lives in the line of duty," said Dr Moyes.

Rev the Hon. Dr Gordon Moyes AC MLC

Rev the Hon Dr Gordon Moyes AC MLC is one of Australia’s most respected Christian leaders. Ordained as a minister in the Uniting Church in Australia, he served for 27 years as the Superintendent of Wesley Mission Sydney, Australia’s largest non-government welfare provider and the world’s largest city-based church. He is also a prominent evangelist, broadcaster and elected Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council.

He became a household name in Australia many years ago when he began as host of the weekly television program Turn ‘Round Australia and radio program Sunday Night Live with Gordon Moyes.

Prime Minister John Howard characterised Dr Moyes as “the epitome of effective Christian leadership”, when describing the way he had grown Wesley Mission into one of the most dynamic and socially responsive church-based charities in the world.
