Devil In Detail: Using Embryos From Aborted Baby Girls

December 6, 2006

"Senator Patterson's Bill has tested the boundaries of common decency and humanity. This Bill not only seeks to erode respect for life but also, will permit scientists to create human embryos where one of the parents is an aborted human foetus. The devil is certainly in the detail of this Bill", said Rev Hon Dr Gordon Moyes today.

"It is beyond comprehension that this proposal has not yet been rejected for the abhorrent breach of human rights that it entails."

"From the outset, I have agitated for an outright rejection of this Bill. And, I will continue to make a stand against this Bill. I have also said that this Bill will facilitate the killing of eggs and babies of aborted baby mothers. No one in their right mind could support this provision, a provision that clearly undermines the sanctity of life."

"Now a Liberal Federal member of the House of Representatives, Michael Ferguson, is presenting an amendment outlawing the use of aborted baby girl's eggs to be fertilized then destroyed. Former Deputy Primer Minister John Anderson supports the amendment. For what it is worth, I commend this amendment wholeheartedly. It is hoped that Members of the House of Representatives will follow suit and support Mr Ferguson's amendment."

"Senator Patterson's Bill will soon have to go back to the Senate which only passed it by one vote, and its passing is no means certain. How can the consciences of Members of Parliament that vote for this "inhuman" bill not be seared by the indictment it presents on human life, especially when proven and sound technology currently exists for using adult stem cells?"

The Senate passed Senator Patterson's "inhuman" bill on Tuesday 7th November 2006 by 34 to 32 votes. The House of Representatives is currently debating the bill with a final result due any day now.

"I urge all those who care about human life to contact the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, to urge them to support Mr Ferguson's amendment and to pray for an outcome in favour of human life", said Dr Gordon Moyes.

Rev the Hon Dr Gordon Moyes AC MLC is one of Australia’s most respected Christian leaders. Ordained as a minister in the Uniting Church in Australia, he served for 27 years as the Superintendent of Wesley Mission Sydney, Australia’s largest non-government welfare provider and the world’s largest city-based church. He is also a prominent evangelist, broadcaster and elected Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council.

He became a household name in Australia many years ago when he began as host of the weekly television program Turn ‘Round Australia and radio program Sunday Night Live with Gordon Moyes.

Prime Minister John Howard characterised Dr Moyes as “the epitome of effective Christian leadership”, when describing the way he had grown Wesley Mission into one of the most dynamic and socially responsive church-based charities in the world.
