Toy Story 3 Toy Story 3

Warwick Marsh
Fatherhood Foundation Newsletter - August 2010

'Toy Story 3' is one of those films that really gets under your skin and particularly under the skin of your children. Why? Because children love toys and dads do too. Benjamin Franklin got it right when he said, "Old boys have their playthings as well as young ones, the only thing different about them is the price."

I remember as a child that going to a toyshop was my dream and for your children it is probably no different. The trouble is that going to a toy shop with your children could be a very expensive experience. The good news is that going to Toy Story 3 with your children could well be cheaper than going to the toy store.

Why am I waxing so eloquent about Toy Story 3? Last week I decided to see if the movie reviews were true. Everyone's been raving about Toy Story 3 and this movie is well on the way to becoming the biggest grossing Pixar film of all time, and the highest grossing film of 2010 in the USA. The average gross for each Pixar film worldwide is US$550 million, which makes Pixar the most successful and profitable film company in Hollywood.  As Joshua Sanders from the Austin American-Statesman  says,   "Sometimes, cartoons are about more than just fun for the kids - a fact that Pixar has taught us with its eleven films. What Pixar has contributed to computer-generated films has been both uplifting and inspiring, and to Robert Velarde, author of "The Wisdom of Pixar" it has also brilliantly infused virtue in its movies".

Many Hollywood producers are possessed by a maniacal urge to deliver plots full of gratuitous sex, violence and gore. The great bulk of these films are box office flops. Pixar have yet to make a movie that doesn't make money because they have worked out what families and children want. The average family wants to watch a G or PG movie they can enjoy, without embarrassment. Toy Story 3 is one of those films.

I settled into my seat for the ride, and was not disappointed. Toy Story 3 is a great family movie that every dad will enjoy as well; highly creative, with a great storyline to boot. The Rotten Tomatoes website gave Toy Story 3 a 99% rating and Metacritic gave it 92%.

Let me give you four reasons why you should take your children or grandchildren to see this movie.

  1. Your children will love it. Do you need another reason?
  2. You will enjoy it. This is the bonus every dad looks for, and why not?
  3. You are spending time with your children by taking them to the movies: driving together in the car, sharing the experience, possibly eating a snack together after and then talking together about your favourite parts of the movie.

You are putting a priority on fun and that's the language your children know instinctively. Fun is the language you need to rediscover to become an even better dad.

Lovework

As the famous basketball player once said, "Just do it!" For your children, fun is everything. We forget this at our peril. How much longer must our children wait?

Yours for more fun
