Greens - General Overview of Same Sex Policies / Views

2007:

Greens

Australia VotesThere has been some controversy this week about the absence of a response from the Greens on ACL's election website, Australia Votes. The Greens declined to respond to the ACL’s 25 questions and ACL advised the party that this would be recognised on www.AustraliaVotes.org.

… The Greens’ decision not to respond to the 25 questions suggests it does not see engaging with the Christian constituency a priority. This is a shame, given that the Greens could hold the balance of power in the Senate, especially if they receive Labor preferences, as is expected to be announced this weekend. This will give them a clear advantage over other minor parties in the race for the Senate.

ACL urges Christians to carefully examine the preference deals between the parties before casting their vote.

Turnbull Gets in the Ring for Gay Rights Fight

(12/10) The Australian | ENVIRONMENT Minister Malcolm Turnbull will tell gay and lesbian voters in his electorate that he will fight for an end to discrimination against them, in an effort to blunt a Greens and Labor attack on the Coalition's credibility.

The Greens said yesterday the party would use its support for gay marriage to win votes from the Labor and Liberal parties in seats with high numbers of gay and lesbian voters.

A targeted letterbox campaign about same-sex marriage will be run in the seats of Wentworth, held by Mr Turnbull, Sydney, held by Labor's Tanya Plibersek, and Grayndler, held by Labor's Anthony Albanese.

But Mr Turnbull last night told The Australian that he would continue to articulate his view that discrimination against gays and lesbians should be removed.

"My position on the need for removal of discrimination in this area is unwavering - I will continue to advocate for this reform," he said.

Greens leader Bob Brown, who is gay, yesterday accused John Howard and Kevin Rudd of pandering to homophobia to win votes.
