The Australian Christian Lobby today launched its Queensland election website www.qldvotes.org including responses to questions it has put to the parties, but was disappointed in particular with the failure of Anna Bligh’s Labor Party to respond.
ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said the LNP had responded to its questionnaire with answers now posted on the site.
“Labor’s failure to respond not only makes little political sense in an extremely close election but it prevents the Christian constituency from knowing where Labor stands on key issues of concern – a right that should not be denied any constituency,” Mr Wallace said.
“ACL is determinedly non-party partisan, but it is not a fence sitter,” said Mr Wallace.
“Recently there has been a barrage of Labor state government legislation from ACT, WA and Victoria that has trampled on the rights of children in favour of homosexual rights with same-sex adoption and surrogacy, introduced charters of rights, removed protection for the unborn and even removed the right of Christian doctors to honour their conscience by not offering referrals for abortion.
“Queensland voters have the right to know if similar legislation is planned for Queensland if Labor is returned to Government,” Mr Wallace said.
Former Premier Peter Beattie’s brothel laws which force large councils to approve brothel applications was an affront to local democracy and something Christians were looking to both parties to address. With Toowoomba currently protesting a Government-imposed brothel, other communities are concerned they too in time will be forced to have State-sanctioned brothels.
“Beattie’s law was a cynical attack on local democracy and something we need to know Anna Bligh’s policy on,” Wallace said.
Qld Labor had also refused to take part in an address for Christian leaders to be webcast around the state in the style of the Rudd – Howard event in the 2007 Federal Election. Other Labor State and Territory Governments had shown no such reluctance, participating in similar events before large crowds in the 2008 NT, WA and ACT elections.
