The 2Day FM scandal over the grilling of a 14 year-old girl live on air about her sexual experiences by Kyle Sandilands and Jacki O shows the depths to which we have sunk as a culture.
Her tragic revelation about being raped as a 12 year-old was broadcast as part of this ill-conceived stunt.
The girl’s pain was compounded when the revelation was handled with characteristic moral obliviousness and insensitivity by Sandilands.
Corporations like Optus which advertise on 2Day FM need to be given a clear message that they should not commercially support people like Kyle Sandilands and Jacki O and their station’s owner Austerio.
Writer Melinda Tankard Reist’s column in the Australian reveals that Sandilands’ has a sordid history of sexual stunts on air. It is time he was off air.
Please send Optus a quick e-mail and tell them it is unacceptable to continue putting corporate dollars towards the likes of Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O.
Optus says on its website: Optus believes that its responsibility as a leading corporate is more than just solid financial performance. Our responsibility to our society is also important.
Well, here’s a chance for them to show it.
William Wilberforce and his team of anti-slavery campaigners hit the slave trade where it hurt by refusing to buy sugar produced on slave plantations.
Given that 2Day FM is standing by Sandilands, commercial pain may be necessary to help the station focus on the hurt its shock jocks caused a vulnerable 14-year-old.
