Qld parliamentarians urged to vote down same-sex surrogacy

Australian Christian LobbyAustralian Christian Lobby Newsletter

August 2009

The Queensland Government is moving to legalise surrogacy for same-sex couples, with Premier Anna Bligh this week telling parliament that the proposed bill would be introduced before the end of the year.

Despite acknowledging that some in the community would have a “moral dilemma” over her moves, Ms Bligh said “the reality is that modern technology has made pregnancy and birth possible in circumstances never previously imagined, particularly by our legal statutes”. In other words she is saying that it is technology rather than moral values which should govern Queensland’s laws!

ACL Queensland Director Peter Earle has urged Queensland parliamentarians to vote against the moves, as they would deprive children of the complementary love and care of both a mother and a father.

He has reminded the LNP that they gave the Christian constituency a clear pre-election commitment to oppose same-sex surrogacy arrangements and, in the interests of children, has urged Labor politicians to also reject the bill (Labor MPs are to be given a conscience vote).

“While we understand the desire of adults to have children, we should not be placing those desires above the rights of a child to have both a mother and a father. Children are not commodities and their interests should always come before the desires of adults,” Mr Earle said in a media release issued on Tuesday.

“This is a form of social engineering and experimentation with children which would further undermine the natural family in a way that would be of great concern to many people in this State.”
