Californication' - Week 5 - 24 September - Melbourne advertisers

Saltshakers Media Release:

September 2007

Please contact Channel 10 and the advertisers. . .

Some more companies have said they've asked Channel 10 NOT to show their ads during 'Californication' - making a total of 38 companies!

The latest companies to withdraw ads are: AAMI, Woolworths, Chemist Warehouse, A D^Zign, Highland Fling Restaurant (both Toowoomba), Bluescope Steel and S C Johnson (who had ads in the early episodes for Duck Magic Scrub (Melb, 10/9), Windex Window Cleaner (Adelaide 3/9), Duck Liquid Toilet Cleaner (WA, 3/9), Glade Clean and Pure (WA, 3/9).)

Thank you to all these companies!

If you receive a reply from a company you have contacted please write back and thank them!

The other companies are listed on our Campaign page at http://www.saltshakers.org.au/html/P/302/B/428/

1. Write to Channel 10 about the program:

As well as mentioning why you are concerned about this program being shown, you could express concern about them promoting a quiz show involving 5th graders, called 'Are you smarter than a 5th grader?' during 'Californication'. The list of contact addresses for Channel 10 is at http://ten.com.au/ten/contact_us.html

Phone the station nearest you and complain - then send a letter (no emails available).

The website above explains the Code of Conduct and complaint process.

The actual Code of Practice is on the Free TV website - http://www.freetv.com.au/Content_Common/pg-Code-of-Practice.seo

Please also lodge a complaint with Free TV.

Writing to ACMA

When you receive a response from Channel 10 (they have to respond within 60 days - they are defending the show and saying it is within the guidelines) please write to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The ACMA complaint form and documents are posted on http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_90141 This website link answers many of the questions about making a complaint: http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_90137 Send your complaint to: Assistant Manager, Investigations Section, Australian Communications & Media Authority, PO Box Q500, Queen Victoria Building, Sydney NSW 1230

2. Contacting the advertisers.

In writing letters please write POLITELY! Ask them if they know their ad was on (unless you know it is a repeat ad!), tell them about the program, ask them not to advertise on it, and ask for a response. I have attached a list of MELBOURNE advertisers on 24 September. I am collating the other states as we receive the information - we will send those out later in the week. PLEASE contact the companies - using emails or online forms - the more letters they receive the more likely they are to respond favourably. Some companies tell us they are 'monitoring feedback' before making a decision!
