Thank You for Praying for Linda
Festival of Light, Australia
News Update :
23rd October 2007
Dear Friends,
Thank you for praying for Linda last Wednesday! Her speech to the rally on the steps of Parliament House was compelling, but Premier Alan Carpenter was not there to listen.
The WA government gagged the second reading debate on the Prostitution Amendment Bill on Wednesday afternoon 17 October, preventing further speeches.
The bill then passed the second reading stage, with voting along party lines. On Thursday, each clause was discussed and voted on separately during the "committee stage", but debate did not finish.
It will resume on Tuesday 23 October, but the word is that the bill will then pass the WA Legislative Assembly - with Labor MPs voting for it and Liberals plus Independent Dr Janet Woollard voting against it.
However the parliamentary debate is not over. The good news is that the bill then goes to the WA Legislative Council, so there will be more time for reflection. The two Greens MPs in the Council will decide whether the bill passes or fails.
The bad news is that the Greens have said they will vote for legal brothels.
It will take a miracle to defeat this bill. Please keep praying - as Linda said, "for the vulnerable in our community - our sisters, our mothers, our daughters - and yes, our sons."
God bless!
