Home & Away

Saltshakers - Media Release

April 2009

Did Channel 7 deceive us?

Having watched Home & Away last night I am left without an answer to that question – we may never know if the lesbian kiss that did indeed take place was less than proposed - but a lesbian kiss it was.

One report suggests that it was a false rumour picked up by The Australian. Yet Channel 7 did not deny it to the general public.

Seven's head of creative drama and development, Bevan Lee told a pro homosexual group,

“two kisses were filmed - one gentle followed by one "more lusty'' - and, after discussion, it was decided to end the scene after the first kiss. "The decision taken was artistic and had nothing to do with running from the conservative right,'' He said the decision had been made before any controversy over the soapie stars' on-screen relationship.

That fact that a lesbian kiss took place is bad enough, but what makes this scenario a great deal worse is that it was between a female Police Officer in uniform and the very recent victim of a very traumatic crime – male rape and then attempted murder.

If that scenario is not bad enough for very young people to cope with, and parents to get their heads around, the Police officer also let her confused emotions affect her work.

Clearly, the producers desired end result was to show that the initial rejection by the female police officer of the lesbian’s advances was the cause of almost all the problems. Had she accepted this developing ‘relationship’ as 'natural', things could have been very different!

This whole issue is of great concern.
In fact, the Police should be concerned about this portrayal as well as parents.

Firstly, Police ethics mean she should never have become romantically involved with a rape, and then attempted murder, victim.

Portraying a Police officer, who should be setting the highest standards to our young people, and only doing what is right, in an embrace with another woman, would clearly suggests to children/young people that this is OK behaviour.

Indeed had this been a male police officers getiing emotionally involved with a vulnerable young women there would be outrage from many quarters.

This is a yet another classic case of political correctness superseding common sence and good ethics.

Secondly, Parents have now to deal with the unnatural scenario of a uniformed female police officer kissing another woman on the lips in what could only be described as a ‘romantically emotional’ way. Not simply in the background, but the camera panned right into their mouths as they kissed!

Parents are now left to explain to their children why this is unacceptable behaviour for two women, and that the police can be trusted not to ‘get emotionally involved’ with victims of crime.

Once again we ask you to contact Channel 7 about this situation – ONLY if they receive complaints will they even possibly think twice next time. They are claiming 50% support and 50% concern at the moment!

Of course there were those who complained to Channel 7 that they were pandering to parents by their supposed censoring of this lesbian kiss. As stated in our last email on this issue, those protesters don’t care about your children or young people, they just want to further normalise their immoral sexual lifestyle.

Please write yet again (or for the first time if you have not done so yet )

Please write to

REPEAT - Unfortunately Seven has no on-line web or email contact – perhaps they are trying to isolate themselves from any opposition or at least make it harder to complain.

We need to mention this, and ask them to set up a simple feedback & complaints procedure on their web site.
